Sound, Resonance and Healing: An Interdisciplinary Perspective on Indian Music, Physics and Music Therapy

Music is experienced as an artistic and cultural practice, but its basic material is sound, a physical phenomenon that can be studied through vibration, frequency, amplitude, resonance and acoustics. Indian musical traditions provide a rich context for examining this relationship because concepts such as Naad, Swar, Shruti, Raga and Tala describe different aspects of organized sound and musical experience. This paper develops an interdisciplinary perspective connecting Indian music with the physics of sound and contemporary music therapy.
